Schmitz Design-Build is providing full Design-Build services for a new Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility in Arapahoe County, Colorado. The facility utilizes a pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) designed to provide a durable, efficient, and cost-effective solution for the collection, handling, and management of household hazardous waste.

The project presented several unique challenges well before construction began. Schmitz Design-Build worked closely with the Owner to help navigate local grant funding opportunities, coordinate the design around a constrained project site, and manage specialized unexploded ordnance (UXO) consulting during earthwork due to the site's history as a World War II-era bomb testing area. These conditions required extensive coordination between the Owner, design team, consultants, subcontractors, and local agencies.

Through the Design-Build delivery method, Schmitz Design-Build has been able to manage these challenges under a collaborative team structure while maintaining focus on the Owner's budget, schedule, operational requirements, and long-term facility needs. Construction is currently underway, with the PEMB structure being erected and project completion scheduled before the end of 2026.

This project demonstrates Schmitz Design-Build's ability to take on complex industrial and municipal projects where success requires much more than simply constructing a building—from early funding and preconstruction through design, permitting, specialty consulting, and construction.
